„Spring. A time for new opportunities.“ Such was the slogan of the Open House that took place on April 21 and 22, 2010 inRadebeul. The company Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) invited over 200 customers representing the market segment of small format offset printing. The KBA specialists prepared a presentation for the Open House as well as a printing demonstration on the presses Rapida 66, Rapida 75 and Genius 52 UV.

With its production of a record-breaking 15 jobs of 520 sheets each in 59 minutes, the KBA Rapida 106 is the proclaimed makeready world champion in sheetfed offset. There is still no other press in sight to challenge that performance, but the half-format Rapida 75 is nevertheless determined not to be outdone by its larger sister: Within the framework of a print test for a German Internet printer, a five-colour version of the press with coater and extended delivery (format 53 x 75 cm) took just 55 minutes to print seven 300-sheet jobs at the KBA Customer Centre in Radebeul on 19th March. Another 30 minutes then sufficed to handle four more postcard and business card formes. After barely 90 minutes, the press had completed 11 different production jobs.

KBA’s 800m² (8,600ft²) stand (6D560 in hall 6) at the international IPEX 2010 trade fair in Birmingham from 18 to 25 May will present the latest sheetfed offset technologies for commercial, book, plastics and packaging printing in small, half and medium formats, together with the associated integrated workflows and branch software. Following up the success of four years ago, the group’s broad expertise and exemplary innovation strengths as a press manufacturer are again to be gathered under the established banner "KBA: Champions in Print".

What audacity! Purchasing a new Rapida 75 perfector press in the midst of a recession. Not only that – this single press line at Dutch print enterprise Vis Offset in Alphen aan de Rijn has taken the place of two others. “It has increased our flexibility enormously,” says founder Arie Vis.

The 19^th of February saw „Open House Day“ in the Poznan printing shop Classic to celebrate the new half-format sheet-fed offset machine KBA Rapida 75-5 being put into operation. The company KBA took this opportunity to celebrate the „anniversary“ of the 100^thDobruška-producedmachine imported to Poland (beginning in 2005, when KBA-Grafitec took over the direct sales of its equipment in our country), and the 100^th printing unit KBA Rapida 75 from the introduction of this model into the market during the Drupa 2008 Trade Fair.

Market conditions for export-oriented German press manufacturers show little sign of easing. Hit by the economic recession and a slump in advertising, global demand in 2009 was over 40% below the level for 2007. Even Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), one of the world’s leading suppliers of printing equipment, was badly affected by a widespread moratorium on new investment in the print media industry. Although incoming orders of web and special presses picked up slightly in the fourth quarter of 2009, group orders for the year came to just under €890m, a drop of 29% on the 2008 figure of €1,241.5m. With demand for web presses even weaker than expected, Group sales came to €1.06bn, 31% below the prior-year figure of €1.53bn.

KBA-Grafitec is beginning to harvest the fruit of its long-term activity in the Latin American market. The first KBA Rapida 75 printing press in Cuba was installed in the printing house Grafica Las Tunas.

KBA-Grafitec supplied three Rapida 75 printing presses to Azerbaijani print shops in 2009. On December 19, a Rapida 75-4 press was supplied to the Ministry of Interior print shop in Baku.
